Mixing illustration with graphic design : artist research

Julien Gobled

Julian Gobled's work combines simple diagrams and sketches in a black and white colour scheme; this links to the context of my poster design, as the Oripeau project asks for solely black and white images. What I like about these selected pieces is their ability to use negative space within their illustrations, as it creates quite an intriguing visual. I also like how the images break up the text; this is a rule I could experiment with in order to create a dramatic sensation - especially with my images of war.

Natalia Pawlak

I love the nostalgic element of Natalia Pawak's work as it consists of very cartoon like illustrations, creating quite a fun atmosphere. I also like how her illustrations aren't the centrepiece of the designs; she uses negative space and colour to fill the majority, which makes the illustrations feel balanced. I decided to look at these three designs as they all use the method of repeating and layering illustrations; it almost makes them feel like stickers, which adds to the playful element of her work. I could use this approach in creating my own little illustrations, which could then be worked into images and negative space.
