NoPARKING research

I decided to look at other sources of inspiration in the context of contemporary poster design, as it would give me some design methods to look at and follow in my own poster design for the Oripeau project.

What is NoPARKING?

NoPARKING is a exhibition space project based in leeds; similar to Oripeau, they choose submissions to be pasted up in public spaces (their poster dimensions are similar also).

This poster design by No Desire interested me by it's manipulation of images by inverting them. I like how the image is the centrepiece of the poster, but is transformed into one form through the overlapped text.

I really like how this poster design by Sophia Krasomil features illustrations and gradients to split the poster up; the illustrations almost serve as boundaries. As well as this, the use of negative space is really effective, as it works well in an urban space to draw the eye.

Jay Vaz

This poster by Jay Vaz really caught my eye in the NoPARKING exhibition, as its' use of overlapping illustrations looks really interesting as it creates a sense of conflict. I also like how somewhat childish/playful the poster looks, which links to my intentions of my own illustrations for the project.

The nostalgic element of Jays' really stands out to me in regards to how I want to communicate my ideas; he often uses very flat colours and cartoonish styles.

I really want to explore the idea of manipulating cartoons in my own approach to the Oripeau project, as it will introduce an element of fun to my index poster. In order to convey this similar effect, I could look into playing with my illustrations of 'Hot Stuff' to create more of an abstracted piece, similar to how Vax plays with the silhouettes of the Simpson in the above design.
