Concept experimentation
A side
I was inspired by Mikey Joyces' work and wanted to concentrate on texture concepts more. This design above uses textures from my previous designs and layers illustrations also; it kind of embodies the hand made nature of punk and post punk. I kind of wanted to just mess around at this point as I feel pretty confident in my final outcome, but want to explore other avenues mainly for fun. As well as this, this approach kind of remixes my outcome, which was suggested in my crit.
I wanted to use the same components, but experiment with different ways of how I could use textures; I feel like the key aspects of the design is the type and the illustration, as it is used as a motif for both sides of the design. Due to this, I considered how the illustration could be used as a sticker separately, and how the text could be on the plastic cover. I also wanted to make the concept of whitewash and censorship in this design more prominent, so I thought that I could introduce this by printing a texture on the actual plastic wallet to hide or 'censor' the outer sleeve collage.
B side
I pretty much used the same approach and rules for the B side to keep the full concept consistent; the B side however uses the inverted colours and the collage/ texture is taken from the original B side concept. In a sense, this does work like a remix, which could even be applied to the flag?
Again, this outcome takes inspiration from whitewash and applies it to the plastic wallet to hide the initial design. I think conceptually this works super well and I could investigate how I could apply this to my original outcome? For this I feel like it visually looks a bit bland.
Layering images
These versions start to involve the imagery used in my initial outcome, in order to add more colour and depth to the texture. I feel like these work a lot better visually as they don't look as flat.
I definitely prefer these iterations that blur the imagery/ colours as it creates a stronger juxtaposition between softness and the harshness of the texture/ collage. This kind of works better as well in regards to conveying references to the clash of vocals and instrumentals in the micro genre.
Mockups
I decided to just test these ideas out on mockups. I am kind of torn whether to continue developing my original final outcome and testing out different styles because as mentioned in my crit, I could keep generating visuals forever. I think that I could take inspiration from the white wash idea in these outcomes, and possibly generate more stickers that could work commercially? e.g. add the song name, etc. Despite this, my main focus should be on the flag at this point, and just refining my outcome as I feel like it is pretty strong and my peer/ crit feedback proves that.
