Mikey Joyce

Mikey Joyce; research

I really like the textures in Mikey Joyces' work, and how he explores ugly colour palettes in his work; this links to my style, and I relate to his visual languages a lot. He was suggested to me during my final crit (thanks Orlando!) and I really love his work. I feel like it captures a strong sense of nostalgia yet giving nostalgia a more fresh, contemporary feel.

I like how he uses a lot of hand rendered type; it has its own strong personality and seems to be very dominant in his work. I suppose I have put a lot more energy and focus into my typefaces this project, and I have to say I'm getting more into type design. Again, these are kind of intentionally ugly, and are visually intriguing.

I love the gritty atmosphere in his illustrative work, and feel like he explores a lot of interesting compositions. This illustration in particular has kind of pushed me to maybe consider other elements I could add to my final outcome? Maybe some badges or an illustrative based print?

I love this typeface design and feel like it relates a lot to my typeface for the album cover; it looks super alien, yet explores the nostalgia of sort of a video game format. I feel like this balance of nostalgia and newness is super important in my own work, as it embodies the idea of a 'post' genre (post punk) as its kind of an extension of an original concept.

I really like the minimalism in this design, and how its very texture focused; I could maybe try stripping back my concept and push a more refined outcome? That could maybe generate some new ideas also.
