Postcard/ print concept

Initial sketches for typefaces

I decided continue developing a warped/ distorted typeface to play with illegibility and censorship; these versions are also the Russian translations of the songs, so introduce this aspect into the final outcome. This allows the final album design to combine western translations as well as their native language; in a sense, this relates to the origins of punk in Russia, as it was very much a western scene that was 'smuggled in'.

3D rendering

I refined the sketched type slightly by adding a 3D rendered effect (the same used for the album cover design); this allowed the prints to visually relate to the themes in the album design, thus contributing to more of a confident and consistent outcome. I also feel like the warped nature of the typeface worked super well as it emphasised its fluid personality and somewhat alien feel to it.

Developing postcard concepts

For the visuals of the A5 prints/ mini posters, I wanted it to again relate to the album covers; I interpret the outcome as being a collection, so I want all of the elements to link together. Due to this, I created quite a simple outcome through adding the album cover imagery centrally, and framed it with my typeface. I maintained a thresholded effect as I feel like it replicated underground punk poster best and fit with grittier undertones. As well as this, my album cover and flag concepts were a lot more chaotic and visually energetic, so I wanted to add a bit of conflict by the more stripped back nature of the prints. Furthermore, this seemed to fit well with the low budget diy nature of punk flyers, and complimented the album covers with a cleaner outcome through the inclusion of negative space.

For each of the 2 a5 prints, I used colours from the A/B side of the album cover, but toned it down in a pastel hue; again, this kind of served as a visual reference but more of a conflict against the neons within my album outcomes.

Flat lays

I thought it would be a nice contrast to use the imagery from my flag concept as the other side of each print, as it visually corresponded with both of the two songs (an illustration of dance). I also wanted to tie in the colours with having the opposite side in a brighter hue of the pastel, which worked well in reflecting themes of conflict yet the harmony of harsh instrumentals and soft vocals within the micro genre. As well as this, by adding these elements to the final collection, it adds more value to the final design and ties everything together.
