Further development
After the final crit, I took advice and decided to approach different ways of repeating text and making space for the blurb; this was a crucial part in the design process as it would allow me to finalise the design for submission and follow the rules set by Penguin.
I cut out some sections of the texture in order make space for the blurb; there needed to be a sufficient amount of space as the blurb for the book is quite big, but I still wanted to apply the same rule as the cover in order to provide consistency.
I decided to also take advice from the crit on experimenting with how I could fit the title in the spaces of the image. I repeated text to explore the theme of chemical reactions and duplication, which looked quite fun. However, I didn't really like how this turned out as it looked too busy and chaotic which distracted from the legibility.
Playing with the blurb
Here is an almost finalised version of the Penguin cover design; I decided to improve the approach of duplicating the text/ title by using whites to make the design look less busy and clean, as well as developing a focus on the title. As well as this, this cover version uses the same method of repeating text for the blurb, which I really like the aesthetic of; I managed to fit all of the blurb in and still had some space to experiment with filling areas with the title - the only issue is that this looks a bit too busy and I feel like I could fill the other spaces with something alternative. I also added the barcode and logo to this design n order to see what it would look like contextually, and I think that it works quite well with the design.
Feedback/ reflection
Although nearly finalised, I feel like there is still areas I could improve on for the final submission; I decided to ask peers on what I could develop to strengthen the design:
- Move the bottom cover text slightly as it is too far to the edge of the cover
- Create more negative space on the front cover by shrinking the image slightly
- Make the space for the blurb bigger so I can fit more white text
- Play with different colours maybe?
