Modernism in editorial design : Twen magazine

Modernism

Twen magazine
  • Used ground-breaking design ideas, and advanced printing technology
  • Post war era in 1960’s Europe; a new generation of postwar youth was Twens’ audience, they wanted to distinct themselves from their parents, and the new graphical style of Twen was exactly what they needed.
  • Willy Flekhaus was an art director for Twen in this period, and was influenced by the Swiss formalisation in the magazines design; using a rigid grid layout, simple typography and what were considered ‘erotic’ images.
  • Used a 12 column grid which was used in endless ways to combine multiple, 2,3,4 or 6 column layouts. This is considered one of the most notable grids ever developed for magazine layout.
  • The magazine also used the approach of hanging text, which created the foot of the page ragged.

The type used by Flekhaus was inspired by the modernist approach developed in the 1950s’ he exclusively used sans serifs; using bold, compact text for headers, and a mixture of narrow columns and wider single columns
