Experimenting with layout

 Experimenting with layout

In response to some research into the format considerations of my publication, I wanted to explore ways of communicating censorship through physical elements in order to keep a minimal yet playful interactive user experience. Inspired by Evie Crook's Fluxus publication, I wanted to create a initial layout concept that uses multiple folds that bring images together.

Sketches

In all honesty, I'm not the best at measuring and maths, so I kind of just grabbed a sheet of A4 paper and folded it, sketching out where the images could meet and be split apart; this means that the sheet would be double sided, consisting of a lot of negative space with cut up images. Initially, the layout looks very minimal and confusing, but I thought it might be better if the images were numbered or I could maybe label each image with a certain coordinate linking to locations associated with it.

Digital/ image layout

Using the grid I sketched out, I decided to put the layout into practice to see how it would look once the images were put in. The small lines are to provide folding guides for the user, but I'm not sure if thats needed as it could be quite interesting for the audience to figure out what direction to fold the paper in?

Ideally, to test if this layout actually works, I need to print it out physically which I'm planning on doing at some point. I quite like the direction that this is going in, as I've always been a designer that focuses on visuals and styles too much, so starting a project with more of a conceptual and practical consideration is definitely interesting as I feel like I'm challenging myself a bit more.

Despite this, I want to continue to generate more initial concepts of how I could apply themes of censorship whilst keeping the publication educational; possible ideas could be invisible ink, scratch cards, cutting out layers of paper, stickers
