Presentation structure and notes
BEFORE UNIVERSITY
More into illustration
Focused on things looking ‘nice’; not very conceptually driven
TERRIBLE at typography
FAVOURITE FIRST YEAR PROJECTS
Oripeau project; being selected
Garfield Minus Garfield COP project; getting into publication
Album cover project; pushing myself to consider production and getting into type design
WORST FIRST YEAR PROJECT
Penguin book competition; felt too restricted and wasn’t a conceptually strong outcome
SUMMARY OF MY STYLE IN FIRST YEAR
Considered the concepts of my outcomes more
Got into creating custom typefaces
Very into publication design
Crazy colours and super manipulated images
Very digital based
Love stickers
LOCKDOWN/ SUMMER
Started getting back into illustration
Set my own personal briefs
First Everpress campaign
Wanted to integrate analog methods into my creative process; illustration
Try new things; moving image and animation
Explore my interest of publications more
Get better at typography
Collaborate
STICK IT TO THE MAN
Pushed me to consider practical production methods; creating stickers and ring binding
Helped me explore a more minimal visual language
Aligned with who I want to be as a designer; witty and playful design
Helped me consider the context of my practice in terms of witty design and the role of graphic designers
Wasn’t a massive fan of the practical outcome; it didn’t feel as refined as I wanted it to be
MOODGLYPH
By far my favourite project on the course (so far)
Enjoyed being able to collaborate
Pushed me to consider time management and logistics of a project
Explored my interest of typography
Allowed me to consider practical elements of publications; printing, stickers, packaging, business cards
Improved my skills of branding/ keeping a consistent visual identity
Was a really fun and engaging project; was great to see so many people submit to it (including some designers I look up to)
Helped me gain an insight into the design industry
Pushed me to try new things; animation/moving image
Gave me reassurance that after graduation I don’t have to commit to one way of working (freelance or studio)
Inspired me to continue to evolve as a creative and constantly try new things
The team at Everpress commissioned me to create a holiday card to send out to their favourite creatives
It gave me the opportunity to create something illustration based
The first time I’ve had my work risograph printed!
Had the amazing opportunity to be featured in Everpress’ artists to watch 2021 article
Definitely gave me a lot more confidence as a designer
Was asked to design a tee for the campaign
My design ended up being featured in one of their campaign photoshoots
Way more confident with typography
More engaged with practical considerations (I love stickers)
Challenged myself by learning new things; animation and collaboration
Found my ‘style’; definitely into super playful and witty design
Explored combining analog and digital elements
Approach projects with more of a conceptual way of thinking rather than stylistic choices
CREATIVE CONCERNS
I’m worried that graphic design (especially on social media) is becoming too ‘trendy’ and that I produce work that is kind of trend based
Because I’m super interested in publication design, I am concerned about the direction printed matter is going in and if it will even exist in the future
MY PERSONAL AIMS
After graduation, before even thinking about working I NEED a year out to give myself a break and travel
I want to ideally work in a small studio as a first step into the design industry as I enjoy collaboration but feel like jumping straight into freelance is terrifying
Inspired by Alexis Jamets’ encouragement to balance professional practice with personal projects, I want to continue to push myself with the personal work I create
Hopefully I want to go into a studio specialising in publication design or album/ music design
After building connections and confidence, I hope to become freelance and possibly travel with work (Like Alexis Jamet)
