What direction do I want to go in?
- My aim is to educate techno tourists on the culture and history of Berlin's techno scene
- Explore censorship; use appropriate formats to explore this theme
- I think posters are relevant as they relate to the flyers and posters of the techno scene
- Social media wouldn't be appropriate as it is at the root of the problem with techno tourism; Berlin has an anti phone policy
- I want to create a publication that is informative on the culture of Berlin's techno community; split into separate categories that focus on elements of the subculture
- The publication could be navigated in a way that is censored; the audience could be engaged by having to piece the publication together; e.g folding out pages that piece images together or pieces taken out of images that have to be put back with stickers
- Each category of the publication could have a corresponding poster located in the area that it is relevant to
- Create a series of symbols that represent each element of the club culture; letting techno tourists know that certain areas relate to certain elements
- The publication could be packaged in a cassette tape or CD tape; kind of like a fold out zine
Audience participation
- Because I want to educate techno tourists, I need my outcome to be immersive and engaging, so some kind of interactive element is essential
- The poster series could be like a scavenger hunt; each poster would have coordinates of a location that relates to each poster/ symbol
- This would relate to how the techno tourists want to go to Berlin, so before going to the clubs they could visit locations and get a feel for the cultural influences on the subculture
Possible limitations
- The concept of a scavenger hunt would only be on a small scale with a niche audience; this obviously won't make a massive impact, but it will mean that the small amount of tourists engaging with the poster series will be more respectful and educated on the culture
- I don't want the outcome to have any technological elements, as it would be contradicting against the anti phone policy of Berlin's club culture. Also, the techno scene was built on word of mouth and is an underground scene, so keeping everything physically and printed would link to keeping the scene underground and protecting it
- Obviously I can't go to Berlin due to COVID, so I will have to find a way to mockup the poster series within the city; to make it clearer, I will probably have to mockup a map; the publication could have sections of a map that the audience could piece together?
