Weekly Review
Using modular shapes from prism images / pushing distortion
I really like how this type creates a prism effect subtly, which mirrors the theme of reflection; I wanted to push how much I could distort by dragging the triangular shapes quite drastically through the typeface, which gives a rugged empty space. I think I prefer the design without fill as it creates more of an emphasis on the triangular shapes. Regrading, the logotype, I think this type will be effective as it is still legible, yet I think maintains the main theme of the exhibition (reflection).
Additionally, I also played with fill styles to develop alternate versions of my typeface; here above is a dotted fill, which creates a subtle distorted effect. I think that this could work well as my type specimen if it was possibly embossed on a reflective material, allowing the dots to be slightly raised on the page. The only slight issue I have with this typeface is that I question whether it is too readable, and not abstract enough; I obviously want the type to look unique and I'm not sure this has that impact.
For this type, I removed all of the counters from the typeface design to create a stronger, more bold appearance, I think it might be too blocky to be used as a logotype, and the use of a line fill doesn't thoroughly link to the concept of reflection.
Creating a simplified version
This typeface still used the modular shapes/angles of a prism, yet only uses one line/path per glyph to develop a simplified outcome. I actually prefer this design as I can see it working in the context of an exhibition as it isn't too busy. Additionally, the shapes of the font look quite original compared to my previous typeface.
Starting to design some publication mockups/colour schemes
I think these designs turned out nice colour scheme wise, as they are beginning to feature the reflective element of chrometype that I was inspired by to create a sense of reflection. I think the second concept/design looks more effective for a publication, as the white layer kind of cuts through the grey and black to produce a nice juxtaposition.
Summary
I'm pleased with the developments I have made this week following the crit on Tuesday, as I have definitely pushed my type further regarding to challenging how I can consider the theme of reflection.
For next week I still want to continue to experiment with my typeface, and possibly play with the idea of duplication? Additionally, I need to create some solid rules to create a stronger logotype.
