New typefaces

Sketches

After my crit, I was pushed in the direction of playing with more type design. I'm into that idea as its an area I definitely want to improve, so why not. These initial sketches take very different approaches; the first pic is this super chaotic, maximalist design I came up with which explores the aggressive attitudes of the origins of post punk. The other type design on the other hand, uses a softer, more fluid approach, which embodies the soft vocals in post punk.

Digital developments

I kind of like how chaotic this outcome looks, as it plays with the idea of illegibility and censorship. In a sense, the typeface is a rebellion of censorship which works well in embodying the attitudes of punk and post punk.

However, I feel like in regards to the typeface, it looks kind of flat to me, and could do with using more textures? I think it is too blocky to accompany any imagery, and I want my album cover to have both aspects.

I definitely prefer this typeface design a lot more; it balances distortion and illegibility without overpowering any textures. It also still has a very alien atmosphere to it, which I think works nicely in communicating themes within the genre.

These are just a few little tests combining the typeface with textures and different colours; I like the 3D effect that I applied to the type, as it warps it a bit more and provides more depth and texture. I think the type does compliment the texture, but I still want to push this texture concept further as I'm starting to feel like it just looks a bit bland and not a strong/ confident contemporary design. I think to develop these concepts further, I need to develop new textures/ backgrounds and continue with this 3D rendering effect as I think its working.
