Spikey type

ooo spikey type

I kind of wanted to play around with creating some really ugly typefaces to act as a platform for an uncomfortable feeling within my designs; this communicated the semantics of the alienation of punks within Russia, and just fit within the harsh and aggressive portrayal of punks under Soviet rule.

I wanted to make the typeface super illegible; this tied in with the concept of censorship of the underground punk scene in Russia, as in some ways, the punk and post punk youth were misunderstood and surpressed by the government. In this sense, I think this type is quite fitting, however, I found the major difficulty that it didn't really work with any imagery.

These outcomes play around with adding my illustration; the negative space does work quite nicely in adding drama and unease, and the lurking illustration adds to that in its composition. I think that overall, this typeface is definitely an avenue to explore, and has kind of sparked the concept of making my typefaces for this project more illegible in order to convey the idea of censorship. I think I need to try and combine this typeface with imagery in order to experiment with how it could work in relationship to aggressive textures - it could be too chaotic possibly?
