Poster experiments
The next step in the project is to now focus on creating 5 posters for each location/ symbol. I want each poster to include the symbol and corresponding colour palette, as well as each poster following the same rules to maintain consistency and to make them recognisable as a series for the audience. This is largely down to the context of the techno tourist scavenger hunt format; the posters need to be noticeable.
I started off by using the 3D airbrushed symbol style as I thought it could be interesting to play with a bit more texture for the poster. I feel like these don't work as they seem a bit washed out and wouldn't stand out in a public space.
These versions are more of an improvement; they use the original block colour symbol design, which definitely works better. I think that this would stand out more in a public space due to the contrast of colour and negative space, but I feel like I could definitely push the posters to be more conceptual?
I thought it would be an interesting concept to have the posters use the same cut up format as the publication; the user could scan the QR code to virtually twist the design to form the symbol? The only issue with this is that it won't be initially recognisable in a public space, as the symbol will be distorted.
I also tried playing with the posters format, exploring a square composition to link back to the publication/ CD format. This definitely works better in the context of the broken up version (shown above), but again, my worry is that this might not be recognisable to the audience.
Out of all the formats I have explored so far, this one is definitely my favourite as it is minimal but retains the same sense of voice and effect of the publication. It also keeps the symbols recognisable to the audience, which as mentioned before is essential in creating a cohesive narrative. Also, I was thinking that to make the posters more playful, there could be some sort of animated element when the user scans the QR code? At the moment I'm a bit stuck on what the QR code element could introduce, as obviously involving phones is a bit tricky as the Berlin ethos is very anti phone.
