Do artists have the duty to save the world?

I really love the witty thinking in this design, as it plays with pop culture references and political messages; I feel like I could take inspiration from this for the content of my publication, as it would further expand on the tone of voice I want to creates - its communicates a message effectively without loosing a sense of humour.

"Art has long been used as a means not just for personal expression, but as an agent of change and persuasion—be that around politics, love, gender perceptions and now, with more urgency than ever, the climate crisis. Numerous artists are making work that bemoans what people have done to the world. They seek to show people the severity of what humankind is doing to the natural world that we have, and how we are rapidly fucking it up"

Sadness is a No Go Zone

Adapt created a collaborative exhibition showcasing environmental activism posters and artworks to celebrate the ethos behind the political organisation. The work shown at the exhibition focuses on positivity and sustainability, through using witty puns and messages, and cartoon posters. I feel really inspired by how the exhibition was used to create a safe space for environmentalism, through not portraying it in a hostile way (like how protests are perceived). Due to this, I really want to resonate this visual language in my book, in a way that uses art as a protest in itself, and I think a sticker format works really well in being proactive in environmentalism.

Further ideas:

  • Make an A2 poster to wrap the publication in with a sustainable paper stock; this would vocalise the ethos behind extinction rebellion and climate change activism groups
  • The poster could be an image of a car; the audience could stick the bumper stickers on the poster, making the user experience more interactive and link to the the origins of stickers and politics
  • Make a tote bag to put the book in; using sustainable materials and provide a reusable shopping bag for the user - helping them become more environmentally conscious
  • The sticker paper could also be made from recycled paper
  • Use Hot Wheels inspired graphics!
