Type workshop notes
Playing with type - Great Expectations
How can I play with type to communicate a sense of voice?
This experiment for Great Expectations uses:
- A large, tightly kerned title to place emphasis on the title and the concept of great expectations; it weighs down the text underneath
- The text referring to family members (e.g father) are in a thin pale typeface to explore the concept of Pips' orphaned status, thus indicating a lack of family
- Due to the book being focused around gaining status, the titles and names in the first page are separated and put in a bold font
How can I experiment with type for my book?
- In order to convey a sense of rebellion and activism, I could disrupt rules of typesetting by having intentionally illegible type and type format
- Due to Extinction Rebellion being climate change activists, the type in my book could be tightly kerned to save printing costs and be more environmentally friendly
- The type could be broken apart with stickers to convey a sense of censorship and breaking down 'The Man'
