Initial mockups for publication layout

 Mockups

In order to explore different formats and colour schemes for the publication, I wanted to create a quick mockup using a ring binder format; I definitely think this is important as I need to get a feel for how my outcome could look, or formats that I could experiment with.

I feel like a ring bind binding would be nice and playful for the publication, as it would be an interesting way to add colour to the binding; also, this could also make the outcome have a lot more interactive element to it, as the user could take take things out and add elements in. I also want to play with colour blocking in order to develop a playful colour scheme; these versions use intentionally contrasting colours and kind of ugly colour palettes.

I kind of wanted to explore how I could use a collage approach to adding images, as it provides a more aggressive and chaotic undertone; this could portray the political messages but in more of a non violent way. I don't really want to make the publication feel like its fear-mongering, but at the same time it needs a strong impact.

I feel like this layout feels a bit rigid; the way in how the stickers are laid out feels a bit boring and flat; I could consider new and more experimental ways in how the user interacts with the stickers themselves. Despite this, I think the tip-in format works really well as it offers a structural juxtaposition in the book, as well as using block colours to contrast the visuals. The main use of a tip in would be to add context to the books' narrative, as the sticker designs need information surrounding their intentions and political messages. As well as this, it would be interesting to explore different shapes of tip ins that I could use, or even have tip-in stickers? I thought this could work for example for a bumper sticker design, as the lengthways format would break up the layout.

I think I need to experiment more with breaking up the format of the publication, as this concept of a disrupted narrative could work with the idea of 'stick it to the man' in the sense that the political groups intend to disrupt the status quo. I could do so by playing with different shapes and formats, and how I could use more tip-ins to really develop a fun and chaotic layout.
