'Wrappers Delight' : sketching from the book

 Wrappers Delight : scans

Illustrations

I wanted to play around with generating some quick illustrations from Jonny Trunks' Wrappers Delight book; the book is super interesting and full of collected materials spanning from the 1970s. These very much explore the collective nature of stickers, and how sticker design has evolved through history. Most of the illustrations I produced are really ridiculous; for example, cadburys 'furry friends' that feature elaborate and kitsch illustrations of cute puppies and koalas in hats. I could definitely use 'cute' visuals like this to send political messages?

Another thing that I found really common in Wrappers Delight is how retro candy cigarette sweets were endorsed by cartoon childrens characters such as Sooty; this expands on the outrageous designs of sweet packaging and stickers, with the juxtaposition of cartoons and smoking.

Inspired by the juxtapositions found in retro sweet wrappers and sticker designs, I created my own quick illustration endorsing smoking but with cute and innocent imagery. Above is Lucky the dog; a sweet and innocent cartoon dog that endorses the cigarette brand Lucky Strike. I feel like I could use similar approaches within the publication through using incredibly cute imagery contrasted with serious and adult topics; my publication could look like its for kids at first glance, but actually communicate heavy topics when flicked through.
