Examples of publication formats

 Publication examples

Caroline Sieurin

I wanted to look at some good examples of publications that play with layout in order to inspire aspects of my own publication; I love the use of tip-ins multiple books within this publication by Caroline Sieurin, as it builds a really interesting visual landscape and architecture to the design. This also fits with the context of the publication, in that it is a zine about architecture. "The aim was to combine the two different fields (interior design and graphic design) in order to create a dynamic page layout tying in with style of the architect's work."

Using this approach to my publications' layout would also be interesting, as it could enable me to play around with different paper stocks and providing context with tip-ins. I could also play around with sticker paper and even having other formats like bumper stickers.

First Among Equals : ring binding

I found this zine called First Among Equals, and really love the neon ring binding used; I feel like it gives the publication a really nostalgic feel and contributes to a nicer tactility to the design. I love how it also provides an extra element of colour to the design; I think I definitely want to use a ring bound technique in my final outcome, as it will create a kind scrapbook feel to it, thus linking to the collective nature of stickers/ sticker collection.

Rubbish FAMzine

I looked at some examples of a Singapore family zine 'Rubbish FAMzine', as they are super innovative in the layout/ materials they use within their publications. Obviously I only want to have one sticker book, but I wanted to look at these for inspiration for any extra elements I could develop for the final outcome. This edition above, in particular, is packaged in a retro inspired box. I love how this introduces a more interactive element to the publication, as the user actually has to open up the box to get into the zine. I feel like I want to introduce extra elements to my publication, and take inspiration from vintage sweet wrappers; I thought it could be interesting if my actual sticker book publication was wrapped in something - possibly a poster?

I really love the idea of using a multitude of paper stocks and colour palettes, as it will develop a more fun and elaborate sense of voice; inspired by vintage sweet stickers. I want to ensure that my publication celebrates the tactile nature of stickers, and communicates their interactivity with loads of individual elements to the design (mainly tip-ins).

Ideas:

- Create actual bubblegum wrappers
- Include bumper stickers separate in the publication
- Wrap the publication in cellophane?
- Have a section where the user can colour in the stickers

I could also try hijacking formats within my publication, such as this example of Rubbish FAMzine using a takeaway box format. This could be inspired by protest march signs, or flyers used by the political groups. Also, I could possibly make a box for the publication inspired by candy cigarette boxes?

Can Yang

I love how these zine designs by Can Yang uses different materials to package her zine; this for example uses a plastic bag. Using plastic in my publication could relate to the idea of 'plastic politics' and also the vinyl used in sticker design. Also, the user could stick the stickers on the plastic bag such as the design below:

I could take a lot of inspiration from how Can Yang uses interesting and complex layouts within her publication design; she uses a combination of colour blocking with textured pencil drawings, which offers a nice juxtaposition. I definitely want to use lots of different mediums and textures in my publication to avoid it looking too flat; I could possibly create some stickers that are coloured in with pencil, or simple take textures from graphite? I also need to play around with how I want my publication to interact with image and text, as I could follow a similar approach by leaving little to no empty space.

I love how the images and textures overlap in this example, as I feel like it creates a really fun atmosphere. I could use a similar layout concept for my own publication as I also want to develop a playful atmospshere.

I really like how this zine design is packaged in plastic, as it provides extra elements to the design. I could possibly look into what objects I could package the publication in. What relates to my brief?
