Political stickers : blending feminine/ cute visuals with politics

 Sketches

I was inspired by Anne Lunds' approach to design in how it uses non violent imagery in order to communicate political messages; I started by focusing on cartoons and lighthearted visuals as a result. Inspired by vintage cartoons found in sweet wrapper stickers, the initial illustrations I created were of innocent and playful animals.

I used a juxtaposition of cute animals with swearing/ harsh text in order to communicate the blend of non violent and strong political views. I feel like it helped create quite a witty outcome, which aligns with the sense of voice that I want to create for the publication.

These illustrations were inspired by vintage animal cartoons which contributed to the designs' innocent and lighthearted nature; I feel like this is very much inspired by the OOA's smiling sun, as they approach politics in a more consumable manner. I also like how playful the illustration style is, as it offers more of a juxtaposition between the 'f*cking vote' text.

Digital developments

I also really wanted to add colour into the digital developments, as bright and playful colours will be a massive part of my publication; this will ensure my tone of voice will be more lighthearted and will contrast the context of the political movements. For these illustrations in particular, I wanted to to use more of a washed/ pastel colour palette as it would fit the nostalgic and retro design of the stickers. As well as this, I feel like it allows the designs to pay more of a homage to the stickers found in sweet wrappers - which is vastly part of my visual referencing.

In terms of reflection, I feel like I could experiment more with visual language and illustration styles, as I want to make my stickers as playful as possible; due to this, when focusing on the content of my publication, I could try using different mediums etc. I also need to consider the physical side of my publication, in terms of what shapes I want my stickers to be and what vinyl I want to use. I feel like these designs in particular feel a bit too bland and flat, as I just used a black fine liner - I could try using some more interesting textures?
