Box design

 Box designs

In order to develop the box designs, I wanted to provide a consistent visual language by having a worn texture and the gradient as the key components; the gradient is crucial in referencing the colours within the political compass.

Front lid

For the sides of the box design, I wanted the gradient to be the dominant factor as it references the political compass colours; due to this, the elements printed on the sides were thresholded so they weren't fully block colour black. The actual content on the sides consists of slogans such as 'hours of fun!', 'its utterly absurd!' and 'the game of politics and memes!'. These short and snappy comments create quite a fun and witty tone, thus linking to the references to memes throughout. In terms of these references, the sides also used a combination of comic sans and word art, which again link to meme culture and its' visuals. I also added a little sticker onto the front of the box in order to provide more context to the audience; this develops a sense of intrigue, as the front of the box is still quite ambiguous.

Back

Because the front of the box is so ambiguous, I needed to provide more context to the audience on the back of the box; inspired by the functionality of traditional board games, the back of the box states what the game is about and what is included within the game. Again, the visual language of the back of the box is very witty and anti art with its use of comic sans and word art.

I applied a worn texture to the box design as it seemed somewhat flat without it; also, the texture created more of a playful and nostalgic visual language, being reminiscent of old board games laying around the house. This creates quite an ironic juxtaposition, as the actual context of the game is focused around meme culture, which is a very modern cultural phenomenon. Due to this, the games' undertones play with this idea of the old and the new, which in a sense links to how memes are informed by postmodernist ideas (as discussed in my essay).
