Leah Malondas' Glyphworld

 Glyphworld

I referenced Leah malonado's Glyphworld within my essay, as her work integrates meme culture references and design that adopts a witty sense of voice and tone. Glyphworld applies Gen Z's sense of humour through applying the 'meme culture classic' alignment chart to typography; Malonado created several typefaces that responded to this meme. The result is a very playful and contemporary typographic response to meme icons; culturally, it is a very niche reference, which further expands and relates to the idea that memes operate on a personal level. Malonado discusses how the typefaces within glyphworld are up for interpretation, and focus on personal responses to memes. As a result, because her work is extremely relevant to both my essay and argument, I want to create my practical response using inspiration from this user experience and element of interactivity.

I think that applying a similar visual language for my practical could work really well in discussing the personal interactivity within meme culture; I need to design something that celebrates how we interact online, specifically in the sense that memes operate from person to person, so the decisions and jokes made online consist of a lot of niche references and humour applicable to Gen Z. What I also love about glyphworld is its' relevance to the 'notion of absurdism' also elaborated on within my essay; this basically talks about how Gen z's sense of humour and jokes within memes are very much orientated around completely absurd and unrelated content. This is also massively important in the context of meme culture within politics; 'media activist' apparently use random and absurd imagery to discuss more serious issues, thus allowing random images like cute cats to become politicised. Due to this, I want my practical outcome to capture and explore the notion of absurdism, as in my essay it is a key influence and justification for the death of satire. As a result, like Leah Malonado, I could possibly reference a certain meme format in my practical response, so I need to start researching into this to find something that would be able to explore the interactive focus within meme culture.
