Aku Vig
Aku Vig is a designer which stood out to me through his unique visuals of layering imagery and textures to build an immersive visual experience. I really like how he uses soft colour palettes with harsh and rigid shapes; it links somewhat to post punk through a juxtaposition of softness and sharpness.
I also really like how abstract Vigs' imagery is, as it maintains an allusive experience for the audience through creating a general mood of the music; for example, this design for Denzel Curry uses distorted and somewhat harsh textures to reflect aggressive undertones in his music. This approach to design for music is quite interesting, as I could try using abstract visuals in order to communicate or create an overarching mood of Russian post-punk.
In terms of the manipulation of imagery within his album art, the high contrast is very relevant to the direction of screenprinting, as the colours are very separate. The cropping of his work is also pretty interesting, as they cut off elements of the text ; this sparks the investigation into whether titles are fully required in album cover design- is it better to leave the design more allusive? I also find Vigs' attention to detail pretty cool as he even creates a design for the vinyl; this is something that I could consider, for example the sticker in the middle of the vinyl.
