Russian Constructivism and El Lissitzky

Russian Constructivism

"Constructivism was an artistic and architectural philosophy that originated in Russia beginning in 1913 by Vladimir Tatlin. This was a rejection of the idea of autonomous art. He wanted 'to construct' art. The movement was in favour of art as a practice for social purposes."

Photography

I looked at Russian constructivism photography as it had hard elements of harshness and industrial tones that communicated the melancholy tone of voice that post punk has; the harsh angular shapes reflect the instrumentals of Molchat Doma and Bueraks' music, and fit in with the moody atmosphere I want to create. I could also use these images as grids for elements of the design?

El Lissitsky

El Lissitzky was a key designer within the constructivism movement, using cubist style shapes and juxtaposing their silhouettes; this linked to my intentions with the album cover, as I want to juxtapose the musics vocals and instrumental aspects to reflect a conflict/ power struggle. In a sense, this power struggle within constructivism shares themes with post punk, due to the angst and conflict against the Soviet Union. Visually, I could explore the shapes in Lissitzky's work in developing my own modular typeface?
