Digitally manipulating textures
I took this image of a vacant building window as it linked to the idea of Molchat Doma meaning 'houses are silent'; this communicated the eerie and melancholy atmosphere that I wanted to create, and seemed like a visually interesting texture to use for an abstract cover design.
These designs use the same method that I used for the previous shattered glass album cover; I an airbrush stroke to introduce gradients of colour, and created scratches of colour to reflect the harsh nature of the genre. The black texture of the window image was thresholded to develop a juxtaposition against the soft colour palette, thus communicating the juxtaposition within the genre. I also decided to super crop the image as it allowed me to develop a lot more of an abstract and confident design; it definitely fits within a contemporary atmosphere a lot more. The only issue with this design was that I felt like it could be framed with some other imagery, in order to create more drama?
Creating a double sided layout
In order to frame the imagery further, I decided to combine the previous texture with the other cover design for Buerak; this worked well in creating a contrast between both textures, and the colour palettes of the two. The textures were framed with the my own typeface, and used contrasting colours; colour wise, the design is very chaotic, but this is intended to relate to the chaotic and busy instrumentals in post punk.
Here is what the album cover design would look like front and back; these are two outcomes that play with different colour palettes. I think visually I prefer the first one as it looks a lot softer, which links to the vocals in post punk. I think to develop these deigns further, I need to think about how each element could be layered physically (although it won't be printed any more), as I could consider plastic over lays and the idea of zines? Also I want to be more ambitious with my type possibly, as I have only used little experiments.
