Testing out compositions/ textures
I wanted to play around more with the initial images I took for the post punk album cover, by focusing more on texture and overlaying images to create a more immersive design. This edit above is a cropped section of a previous design, yet it works a lot more effectively in my opinion through a stronger focus on the eerie light; I obviously want to keep an element of eeriness to set the mood for the genre. I like how this is also slightly reminiscent of horror imagery - this could be a cultural avenue I could explore? e.g. Soviet/Russian horror films?
These designs involved the same image but with an overlayed texture from a collage that created a ripped effect. I like how this design looks somewhat aggressive and harsh, which communicates aspects of post punk. However, I feel like I need to juxtapose this angry nature with something soft in the design, as at the moment the angry red makes the design look way too aggressive possibly?
This used the same approach as the previous designs, but with a black and white/ halftone colour palette. I actually really like the initial mood that this design gives off; it feels very melancholic but the halftone offers that edge/ punchiness of post punk instrumentals. I feel like this approach to layering textures would be super interesting to develop further, as it communicates the genre perfectly by offering a slight nod to collage.
I experimented more with colours, and started adding two tones to the initial cover designs; I think that the deep purple is quite visually interesting, due to its closeness to the darkness of the black, which makes the image hard to make out. I feel like these designs would look a lot better if I printed them out and manipulated them by hand e.g. folding/ ripping?
This design played around more with layering images and cutting sections out; this reflected the multilayered nature of the genre as well as the contrasts of each aspect (e.g. the harsh instrumentals/ soft vocals). Although the concept works well as capturing the tone, I feel like there is a lot of room to improve the outcome of this cutting/ ripping effect in order to build a more confident design.
