Instagram call out designs
In order to focus on getting as many submissions for MoodGlyph as possible, I decided to create some call out designs to spread the word for the project. In reflection of what kind of sense of voice we want, I focused on created some illustrations to develop a fun and playful atmosphere. The designs also stick to a black and white colour scheme, which is important in building a consistent brand image.
I decided to make more of a character out of the mascot design by adding some arms; in order to make it feel more witty and playful, I added the caption of 'we're crap at typography' in a hand drawn type. Even though the focus of the instagram design is on the illustration, I still made sure to keep it somewhat minimal and feature a lot of negative space to place emphasis on it in terms of its' visual hierarchy. I also think this works effectively as it is somewhat allusive- arguably, we need to also create some more explicit outcomes.
In order to make the call out more explicit, I decided to include a 'what to do' post that goes alongside the illustration to provide more information. This is mainly because so far, we have received some questions into what the brief actually requires.
I also wanted to experiment a bit more with adding texture to the brand image; these examples uses a photocopier effect which adds more depth to the visuals. Despite this, I asked for some feedback from Spencer and he suggested that it would be harder to keep up with a consistent instagram layout. Due to this, I decided not post the photocopier effect version as it didn't fit with the previous posts. However, this is an effect we could possibly use later on in the projects development? Its just at this stage in the project, we need to ensure our instagram feed is clean and clear.
This design is basically just the previous concepts translated into an instagram story format; we decided to post some stories to further spread the awareness of the project.
Another design decision Spencer and I made was to post on our instagram in black and white alternation; this would mean that our feed would eventually form a grid effect. Due to this, I developed some other call out/ instagram posts to further explore our brand image and create more of a buzz. This version is with a black background, and experiments with different formats such as business cards. The design is kept simple, using the eyes as a motif to provide consistency with the brand image. This design in particular is pretty vague, but I didn't want to make the entire instagram feed fully explicit - there needs to be a sense of intrigue.
Since the previous illustrative designs worked pretty well, I decided to do some more illustrative call outs that explore the theme of typography. I showed this one to Spencer and he liked how it had nostalgic undertones, which further explored the themes of playfulness within the brand image of MoodGlyph. I think I prefer the contrast in the version with the white background, as there is more emphasis on the illustration.
