Colour swatches for the publication

 Colour swatches

Now that Spencer and I have decided that we want to incorporate colour into the publication, I thought I would create some colour swatches to visualise the emotions of the letters (in my half of the publication). We thought it could be interesting to play with gradients, as it would communicate the idea of emotions shifting and changing; due to this, a concept I thought of was to have a continual gradient throughout the book, which would carry on from each double page spread. This would be quite a nice idea as we could create some kind of gradient map of all of the emotions collected together; this would be quite fitting for the poster that Spencer is going to create, as it would summarise the contents of the type specimen.

Applying gradients

These initial experiments are pretty simple in the sense that they just combine the colours of each letters' emotion into a gradient; although I like the idea of the colours blending into one another, I feel like having a full page of colour distracts from the letterforms. This would be an issue as we want the project to be solely focused on the type and their moods, so having a super busy/ vibrant colour background would overpower the type. I think to overcome this issue, I might try adding gradients in more of a subtle way, by using more negative space to emphasise the letters. I need to speak to Spencer to get his opinion on these so far.
