Further colour experiments
Now that we're in the designing stage of the project, I wanted to create some quick visual experiments that explored how we could showcase each letter within the publication, as well as highlighting the mood that they are based on.
Initially, I wanted to keep the designs quite minimal as I wanted to place as much emphasis on the letter itself. I used the emotion card concept that linked the letter back to the emotion; the only issue with this composition and colour scheme is that it looked quite dull and flat, as the small use of colour in the card didn't pack much of a punch.
Resultantly, I decided to add more colour into the design to expand on the theme of moods; this example uses red that relates to the emotion of 'pain' that inspired Toms' letter. To still keep more of a focus on the actual letterform, I created a gradient that would grow from the spine of the publication; this worked nicely in adding a bit of colour to the design without overpowering the visual hierarchy. However, I think the emotion cards looks kind of lazily placed onto the design, so I would probably edit it out.
I experimented with how I could add the gradient colour in order to play around with compositions; I definitely prefer the idea of having it coming from the spine of the bind as it creates a nicer gradient effect and doesn't overhwhelm the letterform.
I think having the emotion card in white works slightly better as it doesn't seem too plonked on top of the page; it fits slightly better with the tone of voice. Now I've created these initial tests, I need to speak to Spencer about what he thinks and how we want to showcase/ use colour within the publication. After doing so, this will let us evenly split up the publication between us both so we can create a final product.
